Arrive at Amman airport, where a Highlands Travel representative meets you and assists with arrival formalities. Transfer to your hotel in Amman for dinner and overnight.

Drive north to Jerash, ancient Gerasa, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East, with Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded street and the Temple of Artemis. Continue to Ajloun Castle, built in 1184 by a commander of Salah ad-Din to watch over the Jordan Valley. Return to Amman for a tour of the Citadel, with the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace, the Roman Theatre and the old markets of downtown. Dinner and overnight in Amman.

Drive south to Petra for a full day in the rose-red city of the Nabataeans, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Ride a short way on horseback, then walk through the Siq to the Treasury and continue past the Street of Facades, the Theatre and the Royal Tombs. The light is at its best in the early morning and late afternoon. Continue to a desert camp in Wadi Rum for a Bedouin-style dinner, an evening of traditional music and an overnight under the desert sky.

Breakfast at the camp, then explore Wadi Rum, the “Valley of the Moon”, on a 2-hour 4x4 jeep tour among sandstone and granite mountains, red dunes, natural arches and ancient rock inscriptions left by the Nabataeans and earlier peoples. Visit Madaba, the “City of Mosaics”, and its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Church of St. George, then Mount Nebo, where Moses viewed the Promised Land, with views over the Jordan Valley towards Jericho and Jerusalem. Continue to the Dead Sea for dinner and overnight.
